Costa Rica is one of the countries with the variest biodiversity in the world, accounting for 5% of the total planet. The species of fauna and flora that live there are many, and protecting and safeguarding them is essential to be able to keep high the number of animal and plant species that are in the territory. Many species are at risk of extinction, due to human actions and climate change. The Costa Rican government has taken the protection and conservation of the environment and its species very seriously. There are many centers and associations that deal, in collaboration with the government and with the SINAC, to safeguard the environment, with conservation and protection programs of many types. The task of saving and caring for the injured and orphaned animals is the animal rescues centers, organizations scattered throughout the country. This is the example of the Jaguar Rescue Center, an organization located near Playa Ciquita, in the Province of Limon, on the Caribbean coast. The centre was founded by Encar García and her deceased husband, Sandro Alviani, in 2008, and is responsible for recovering injured and orphaned animals that are found in the area. Encar continues to work hard in the center even after her husband’s death in 2016. She dedicated herself to this work, despite the difficulties. «you need much love to do this work, love for nature and animals». Says Encar. The center hosts and takes care of various types of animals, such as monkeys, sloths, parrots, ocelot, reptiles and other species. Some of these animals can be released, others, because of their precarious condition, live permanently in the center.
