“The Canary sheep de pelo are at risk of extinction because they have no wool and for this reason for decades no one breeds them. I decided to dedicate my time to the recovery of this native species, inhabitant of our islands” Pilar Carballo was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, she is 51 years old and now owns a finca. “I don’t come from a family of breeders, I have learned all about the job of breeder since I decided to dedicate myself to breeding and agriculture”, she explains. A few years ago, however, I decided to completely change my life and dedicate myself to livestock and ecological agriculture. I’ve never seen a Canarian sheep in my life before!”. Today Pilar contributes significantly to the conservation of this species at risk of extinction. Pilar takes her sheep to pasture every day, taking care of them in her finca La Jara, near Arafo in Tenerife. She has very much at heart her sheeps, and carries on the struggle for the conservation of this species. “These animals are at risk of extinction because they do not produce wool. I give some of my sheep to other fincas who want to start breeding this species thus contributing to their conservation. Canary sheep have been living on these islands for a long time,” says Pilar. The difficulties do not stop Pilar, who carries out her ideas of breeding and conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem, contributing in a fundamental way to the recovery of species such as the Canarian sheep.
